Mammography

It is a specific type of imaging that uses low-dose x-ray system and high-contrast, high-resolution film for examination of human breasts. It is used to look for different types of tumors and cysts. Mammography has been proven to reduce mortality from breast cancer. Successful treatment of breast cancer depends on early diagnosis. Mammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancers. Mammography can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them.

Mammograms can also be used to check for breast cancer after a lump or other sign or symptom of the disease has been found. This type of mammogram is called a diagnostic mammogram. Besides a lump, signs of breast cancer can include breast pain, thickening of the skin of the breast, nipple discharge, or a change in breast size or shape; however, these signs may also be signs of benign conditions. A diagnostic mammogram can also be used to evaluate changes found during a screening mammogram or to view breast tissue when it is difficult to obtain a screening mammogram because of special circumstances, such as the presence of breast implants

CIG provides digital mammography services at the institute using state of the art GE machine. Mammograms are performed by female technologists who are specially trained to do them. Studies are interpreted by board certified radiologist.
